Pioneer Hi-Bred and the Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU) are pleased to announce their first monthly dialogue series of 2010. The international dialogue series aims to promote discussion on global events for Iowa’s professionals. Phil Latessa will discuss community development in rural Tanzania.
In 2008, Phil was appointed the Executive Director of Empower Tanzania Inc—an Iowa non-profit with the goal of improving sustainability and the quality of life through education and economic empowerment. Latessa will discuss how PEPFAR works between Iowa and Tanzania along with the effect PEPFAR has on community development.

The Pioneer-ICIU International Dialogue Series is an integral part of ICIU's educational programming that seeks to engage Des Moines' public and business professionals in dialogue on global issues and Iowa's personal and organizational connections abroad through monthly presentations over the noon hour.
The ninth dialogue in the series will take place on the subject of "Oil and Conflict in the Niger Delta" with Dr. Celestine Bassey.Dr. Bassey, a noted author and Lecturer, is currently a Fulbright Fellow at William Penn University and will discuss the instability of Nigeria and the uncertainty the future holds for the country because of a regime that has turned to force and criminality. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch.
This event is sponsored by the Iowa Council for International Understanding, Pioneer Hi-Bred, Drake University's Center for Global Citizenship, the Greater Des Moines Partnership and William Penn University.

Interpretation/Translation Professional Development Workshop |
ICIU will host an Interpretation/Translation Professional Development Workshop as part of the organization’s efforts to provide annual training for its network of professional interpreters and translators that serve our state.
The two-day workshop will take place at the DMACC Urban Campus from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on December 4 and 5, 2009. The workshop will be provided to ICIU interpreters and translators free of charge.

2010 Iowa Student Global Leadership Conference |

Now in its fourteenth year, the Iowa Student Global Leadership Conference (ISGLC) brings together 100 Iowa high school students for a weekend long conference to foster interaction among students from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide students an opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures.

The Iowa Council for International Understanding held its annual Passport to Prosperity gala on Saturday, October 3, 2009 to a sell-out crowd of 240 people. This is the second year in a row the event celebrating the accomplishments of immigrants and refugees who have made Iowa their home has sold out. The honorees for 2009 were Suku Radia, Ying Sa, Dr. Yogesh Shah, and Sol Varisco-Santini.
It was an evening inspired by the insights of our honorees. Suku Radia, in accepting his award, quoted Pulitzer Prize winner, Oscar Handlin, who wrote “I once thought to write a history of immigrants in Americas. Then I discovered that immigrants were the history of America.” As Suku Radia shared, “Tonight we celebrate a shared heritage that urges us to seek international understanding as a means to global prosperity.”

Iowa Global Connect
Iowa Global Connect is Iowa’s centralized multilingual access point for individuals and entities to the international resources Iowa has available and provide existent international organizations and entities with enhanced access to those who are served by their mission. Global Connect accomplishes this mission through a systematic collaborative network accessed through a state-wide written resource guide, published through the Des Moines Business Record and a dynamic, searchable web service with a live call-in center envisioned in the near future.
ICIU is pleased to announce the launch of the 2009 multicultural resource guide. Printed in eight languages, the International Guide to Iowa is intended to connect newcomers to the resources they need to make a smooth transition, thus emodying the aim of Global Connect. Iowa’s first multilingual international guide will be distributed across the state this week, providing a valuable resource to global visitors and immigrants looking to live, work and raise a family in the state. In addition to basic emergency services and general needs, the 46-page guide includes information regarding employment opportunities, educational services and medical services. There will also be an electronic version, which has the potential to be translated into 49 different languages.

ICIU's Interpretation and Translation Services

ICIU's is Iowa's premier translation and interpretation service in the state of Iowa and has offered its services to businesses, schools, organizations and individuals through a network of more than 100 interpreters and translators specializing in over 42 languages and dialects for over 30 years. ICIU's network of interpreters and translators are thoroughly screened and adhere to signed to codes of conduct and confidentiality. More than this, over 90% of ICIU's interpreters and translators are native speakers, ensuring that interpreters possess the important cultural knowledge and skills to assist in crossing both linguistic and cultural barriers.
ICIU continues to strive to not only meet the increasing demand for interpretive services, but also to improve the quality of the services provided. To achieve this, ICIU has launched a series of programs aimed at the professional development of its network, the education of its clients and the increased accessibility of its services. Become a Volunteer Emergency Interpreter!
ICIU offers free emergency interpretation services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to law enforcement, health and social service providers faced with life and death situations in which language is a barrier to providing appropriate services.

This service assists Iowans of limited English proficiency in attaining access to basic services, while assisting service professionals in providing effective services to those in need.
