      "Why Global Health?"


      Pioneer Hi-Bred and the Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU) are pleased to announce dialogue # 2 of the 2009 Pioneer-ICIU International Dialogue Series. The second installment of the   monthly noon presentations in the series will take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Greater Des Moines Partnership Arthur Davis Conference Room. Dr. Yogesh Shah will address the question “Why Global Health?” and investigate the many challenges of global health, how Iowans are reaching out to make connections across the world and what Des Moines University is doing to train  future health care providers.

      ICIU Receives Grant from Pioneer Hi-Bred


      The Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU) is pleased to announce the acquisition of a $10,000 grant from Pioneer Hi-Bred, a Du-Pont business. Grant funds will be used for the planned   Pioneer-ICIU International Dialogue Series. The contribution will aid in developing the series into a valued monthly activity in downtown Des Moines. The series is designed to engage Des Moines public and business professionals in dialogue on global issues and Iowa’s personal and organizational connections abroad.

      ICIU Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines Grant


      The Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU) received a $3,000 Organizational Effectiveness Grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The grant's aim is to assist nonprofits in their efforts to become more effective, strengthen and engage their Board of Directors, streamline operations, and still provide necessary services. Grant funds will be dedicated to web site audit and development. ICIU’s goal is to achieve its potential to act as a clearinghouse for international resources in Iowa.

      Pioneer-ICIU International Dialogue Series #1


      Pioneer Hi-Bred and the Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU) are pleased to announce the launch of the 2009 Pioneer-ICIU International Dialogue Series. The series will include monthly noon presentations with the first dialogue in the series taking place on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Greater Des Moines Partnership Arthur Davis Conference Room on the theme of "One Iowan's Unique Trip to Baghdad" by Mr. Charles Montgomery.
     

    The workshops will instruct interpreters on a variety of topics relating to best practices for step on tour guides such as presentation of information, consideration of visitors’ health and safety, and answering visitors’ questions suitably. The step-on tour guides will also learn interesting facts and detailed information about local attractions and historical sites, as well as further information about ICIU and the Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.

      "Obama, Israel, and the Palestinian Question" Discussion Table


      ICIU sponsored an afternoon discussion table with Robert Malley, Program Director for Middle East and North Africa at the International Crisis Group in Washington, D.C. and a former Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton for ArabIsraeli Affairs, to talk about positive ways the United States can address conflicts in Israel and Palestine.

      ICIU Receives Community Betterment Grant from Prairie Meadows


      ICIU received a $2,500 grant from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino through its 2008 Community Betterment Grant Program.  The money will be used to address the growing need for interpretation and translation services in Iowa through educational training sessions in the upcoming year.

 ICIU PRESENTS THE FUTURE OF PAKISTAN

 

ICIU presented a free and public forum on Pakistan June 10 at 7:00 p.m. The forum featured Mr. Khalid Hasan, a journalist and former press secretary to former Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
